At the beginning, some 4,000 Ma (million years ago), our planet did not have a solid surface. The passing of time and its movements led to its cooling and eventual formation of a rocky crust. The remains of such primitive crust are the stable areas of the existing continents, and they are known as shields or cratons. Water was present in the form of vapor; rain appeared only when the Earth’s temperature dropped below 100º C.

The first hints of biological activity were found in sea rocks from Greenland, dating back 3,800 million years.

They were one-cell organisms which, due to the low atmospheric oxygen content at the time, must have been anaerobic.

Toward the end of the Precambrian period, moss started to colonize the earth.
