Aconcagua

Normal Route

Pioneer's Normal Route

Pros

  • There is a rescue squad in the way up.
  • High altitude camps are located at fairly regular intervals.
  • This route’s descent is the fastest and most direct.
  • High-altitude porters can be hired at Plaza de Mulas.

Cons

  • The Confluencia-Plaza de Mulas stretch is too long and there is too much elevation gain in one day. To compensate, the stay in Confluencia must be longer.
  • All of the high altitude camps are exposed to the western winds.
  • It is the most popular route; therefore, campsites might be full in the summer.
