Aconcagua
Low Impact
Ecosystems in the mountain are extremely sensitive to man’s activity.
In order not to upset their subtle balance, a great deal of responsibility is required from visitors.
Mt Aconcagua is visited by an great number of people every year, especially during the summer time, the most suitable season to attempt the summit or to simply trek to its base camps.
Being the highest peak of the Americas, Mt Aconcagua represents a great attraction for mountaineers all over the world.
The Colossus of the Americas is located in a protected area, Aconcagua Provincial Park, where Mendoza’s Department of Renewable Natural Resources has been keeping strict control on the collection of the waste originated in the Park.
It is every visitor’s responsibility, however, to consciously apply low-impact policies in their mountaineering activities. They must take with them the waste they produce at base camps and, especially, at high-altitude camps, the most inaccessible ones, where keeping the sites unpolluted is vital.
I urge readers of this book who are planning to visit the Summit of the Americas to become aware of the importance of keeping our planet free from waste and, especially, those remote places where nature is still sensitive and wild, as is the case of Mt Aconcagua.
