Logistics
The term Logistics has been known for quite a long time but its field of application has changed through time.
At present, it is used in the world of business and is being constantly redefined. Logistics, then, involve planning, implementing and controlling efficiently the flow of raw materials, products both in process and finished, as well as the information related to them, from the manufacturing plant to the point of consumption, according to clients’ requirements.
Logistics, therefore, focus on the management of both physical resources and information flow, which start at the supply center and ends at the consumption point. Logistics actually date back to the VII Century BC.
The Greek logistiko of that time was mainly in charge of calculating the amount of supplies needed to make progress according to plan. Therefore, this original logistiko was someone devoted to calculations.
Later, in the II Century A.D., the logista appeared among the Romans. His main task was providing troops with supplies, but he was also in charge of finding information about the best suppliers and giving it to the different units. Thus, logistics found a place in the military world at an operative, as well as a tactical and a strategic level.
The good results arising from this activity prompted the business world to borrow and apply this concept.
